LanTEEAL 2.0 -- Coming in early 2008 with the release of the 2006 Annual Update. LanTEEAL 2.0 Click here for preview.

LanTEEAL, the local area network (LAN) version of TEEAL, enables seamless access to full-text articles and abstracts of 115 current journals in the agricultural sciences—all from the convenience of networked computers.  Just click on a link and the article appears—no compact discs to insert, no Internet, and no waiting.

LanTEEAL's collection is a subset of the original TEEAL collection chosen by 600 international scientists as highly relevant to work being carried out in the developing world. The database is comprised of abstracts provided by CABI, Biosis, Econlit, PubMed and Agricola, plus records created at Mann Library. The abstracts link to the full-text articles.

Operations

LanTEEAL permits up to 10 simultaneous users. For an additional fee, you can increase that number to 20 or 30. LanTEEAL arrives on a 300 GB external hard drive containing the journals. You need at least one PC running Microsoft Windows 2000 or higher to run it on your network, and the server should be running Windows 2000 Server or higher. The client machines [providing user access to LanTEEAL] require Windows 98 or higher. We recommend that you copy the content to a server on an internal network—then store the external drive in a safe place as a back up. Alternatively, though we do not recommend it as the best setup, you can network the external hard drive. A complete list of hardware requirements is below. (Please note: It is strictly forbidden to provide access to LanTEEAL via the Internet.)

Cost

LanTEEAL is sold at cost, which represents a fraction of the cost of standard subscriptions to its journals. The Base Set costs US$3500** and includes 11 years (1993-2003) of literature—valued at close to US$1 million in developed nations. Annual updates cost US$1000 each. The 2004 and 2005 annual updates are available now. The 2006 update can be ordered in advance at a discount if order is processed by December 2007 when it is released. Shipping (by courier) and handling is included in the price. Click here for ordering information.

Hardware requirements (LanTEEAL)

LanTEEAL is provided on an external hard drive containing 270 gigs or more of TEEAL data (journals). The drive is equipped with a USB cable and a power cord. Both the server/workstation and the external hard drive should be connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that filters high and low voltages (recommended: Smart UPS).

The following system requirements pertain to the type of computer an organization needs to provide in order to load the contents of the LanTEEAL external drive and allow ten simultaneous users to connect to it.

Hardware configurations:
Computer 1500 MHz processor or higher
Memory 1 GB or higher
Operating System* Windows 2000 or higher desktop computer or Windows 2000 Server or higher. (If running a Windows server, the TEEAL data cannot be loaded on the system drive which is usually the C drive.)
Free hard drive space** 300 Gb or more
Misc One free USB 2.0 port, Adobe® Reader®
Computer 733 MHz processor
Memory 512 MB Program may load slowly with under 1Gb RAM
Operating System* Windows 2000/XP workstation, and Windows 2000 Server. If running a Windows server, the TEEAL data cannot be loaded on the system drive which is usually the C drive.
Free hard drive space** 270 Gb
Misc One free USB 1.0*** or 2.0 port, Adobe® Reader®

* Users of LanTEEAL may use a Windows 98, Windows NT, or higher workstation. Only the machine housing the TEEAL data must be Windows 2000 or higher.

** Need to plan for growth, as TEEAL will increase by 10-15 gigs with each annual update.

*** With a USB 1.0 connection, load time may be slow (>10 minutes).
